Elementary Education Major
Crossroads views the training of Christian school teachers as a particularly fruitful ministry opportunity. The Elementary Education major is designed to prepare competent teachers for private Christian elementary schools and for teaching elementary-age students on the mission field. A partial list of objectives is given below. Upon completion of this major the student will be able to:
- Appreciate teachers' role of modeling a Christian spiritual and educational lifestyle to students, other teachers, and administrative personnel.
- Present the plan of salvation and principles of Christian growth relevant to students of various cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
- Understand teaching and teaching methodology.
- Understand the social, spiritual, physical, and educational needs of children in order to teach them effectively.
- Develop measured proficiency in the preparation and delivery of classroom lessons.
- Understand the process and be able to integrate aspects of the curriculum into a unified approach to knowledge.
- Understand the differing learning styles of students and develop teaching approaches to accommodate each learning style.
- Be able to complement actual teaching with proper preparation and follow up, including record keeping, lesson plan preparation, test developing and grading, parental contact, playground responsibilities, and other duties required by contract.
- Become familiar with the legal issues which confront Christian schools.
- Understand the racial and cultural diversity within a given classroom so as to be able to fit teaching to the cultural nuances of the students.
