Pastoral Ministry
 

CP 101 Personal Evangelism 3 hours
A skill-oriented course designed to provide the student with the knowledge and ability to share the gospel, lead someone to Christ, and then follow up the new convert. On-the-job training is provided as the instructor takes each trainee out into the community. Shows how to set up a laymen's training program in the local church.
 
CP 303 Dynamics of Discipleship 3 hours
How to nurture new Christians and build committed disciples who can spiritually reproduce themselves. Emphasis is on developing a thorough, workable follow-up program in the local church. Printed lesson materials are evaluated.
 
CP 306 Church Planting/Church Growth 3 hours
This course covers the steps of planting a New Testament Church from the beginning. Included are various models for church planting. Special considerations is given for urban church planting. The Church Growth Movement is studies with practical steps for application today. How to analyze an established church to see the strengths and hindrances to growth I studies. The role of prayer, leadership, vision, relationship, and the unique needs of each size church is examined.
 
CP 308 Biblical Leadership 3 hours
Covers the character of leadership, role of pastors and deacons, team ministry, mission, vision, strategic planning, budgeting, evaluation, time management, working with people, the process of change in an organization, expectations upon leadership, stress, relaxation, and the role of the leader’s family.
 
CP 309 Pastoral Theology 3 hours
Covers the ordinances, visitation program, education ministry, worship, evangelism, counseling, missions, youth ministry, weddings, funerals, ordinations, the church calendar, working with church staff, the role of the Christian school and the church, the church and politics, and church discipline. NOTE: Because this course is designed to develop the skills and practice specific to pastoral ministry, women are not allowed to enroll in CP 309 but are encouraged to enroll in CE 312.
 
CP 406 Homiletics 3 hours
The techniques and styles of pulpit exposition and exhortation are studied. Develops the student's philosophy of preaching. Includes a study of the types of sermons, sermon outlines, sermon organization, and methods of rhetorical speech. Sermons by great preachers are analyzed. Prerequisites: BI 101, 102, 103, 204, 205. NOTE: Because this course is designed to develop the skills and practice specific to pastoral ministry, women are not allowed to enroll in CP 406 but are encouraged to enroll in CE 212 and/or 312.
 
CP 407 Expository Preaching 3 hours
A study of the preparation and delivery of expository messages, including text selection, exegesis, the outline, illustrations, and developing introductions and conclusions. Preaching styles are examined in light of specific cultures. Students are required to deliver prepared messages in class which are videotaped and evaluated by instructor and peers. Prerequisite: CP 406. NOTE: Because this course is designed to develop the skills and practice specific to pastoral ministry, women are not allowed to enroll in CP 407 but are encouraged to enroll in CE 212 and/or 312.
 
CP 490 Specialized Topics in Pastoral Ministry 1-3 hours
An independent study in some topic of pastoral ministry designed to give the student experience in researching some topic of interest. Research paper required. Offered on demand. Prerequisites: CP 101, 308, 309.
 
CP 499 Pastoral Internship 3 hours
A qualified student is placed under the supervision of an experienced pastor for training and experience in the work of a local church. The length of the internship may be, full-time during the summer (6-12 weeks), part-time for six months, or longer if the student desires. Consult with department chairman. NOTE: Because this course is designed to develop the skills and practice specific to pastoral ministry, women are not allowed to enroll in CP 499 but are encouraged to enroll in one of the other vocational ministry internships.
 

Urban/Ethnic Ministries
 

CU 203 Culture, Race, and the Church 3 hours
Examines opportunities, problems, and hindrances to ministry in a multicultural society with emphasis on urban North America. The history, culture, contributions, religion, and family life of major minority groups are surveyed. A biblical view of racism, segregation, interracial marriage, the origin of races, culture, and church responsibilities is developed.
 
CU 301 Developing a Philosophy of Urban Ministry 3 hours
Helps Urban/Ethnic Ministry students to construct a biblical, personal, and contextual philosophy of ministry for a targeted ministry or group. Studies current models/ministries through field work/visitation and class interaction. Approaches to social/political activism, relief work, community development, racial reconciliation, church outreach/evangelism, and church planting are analyzed. Prerequisite CU 203.
 
CU 312 Urban Ministry Strategies 3 hours
Studies biblical and workable strategies and models to reach urban minorities, internationals, refugees, immigrants, gang members, drug abusers, the poor, transients, single parents, high-rise dwellers, including church planting approaches, homogeneous unit theory, community development, negotiable/non-negotiable issues, and culturally appropriate music/worship. Prerequisites: CU 203, CU 301.
 
CU 403 Dynamics of the Urban Community 3 hours
Study of urban social issues, including the inner city, social stratification, gangs, violence, drugs, illegitimacy, poverty, racism, injustices, etc. Briefly discusses the biblical mandate and solutions for urban ministry and the role of the local church and biblically balanced evangelism and discipleship. Prerequisite: CU 203.
 
CU 414 Racial Reconciliation Seminar 3 hours
Exposure to and study of various issues, theological and social, which affect the relationships and ministry between Christians of various ethnic and/or cultural backgrounds. Students will be encouraged to seek biblical solutions and become proactive in dealing with various issues, e.g.., racism, discrimination, separatism, interracial marriage, multiculturalism, etc.
 
CU 490 Specialized Topics in Urban/Ethnic Ministry 1-3 hours
An independent study in some topic in the field of urban/ethnic. The course is designed to give the student experience in research and/or the doing of a practical research project. Research paper required. Offered on demand.
 
CU 499 Urban/Ethnic Ministry Internship 3 hours
Student is placed under a supervision of minister/leader involved in some aspect of urban and/or ethnic ministry in North America. Missions and Evangelism
 

CM 201 Introduction to Missions 3 hours
An introduction to New Testament principles of cross-cultural missions. The course includes an outline history of Christian missions and a survey of current world needs. Also covers the biblical basis and purpose of missions, the missionary call, qualifications, preparation, and the crucial role of local churches.
 
CM 208 Biblical Theology of Missions 3 hours
A study of the biblical basis for missions, including obligations, objectives, motives and means of communicating the faith. Deals with the missionary idea in both Old and New Testaments, the kingdom concept, and the role of local churches. Critiques current missionary activity and thinking with attention to radical Third World theologies, the cultural mandate, syncretism, and universalism.
 
CM 302 Missionary Principles and Practices 3 hours
A practical study of missionary life and ministry including selection of and application to a mission agency, pre-field ministry, fund/friend raising, relationships with family, fellow missionaries, nationals, and supporting churches. General and specialized tasks on the field are scrutinized with the goal of indigenous church planting always in mind. Discusses understanding culture, culture shock, and learning a language. Prerequisite: CM 201.
 
CM 305 History of Missions 3 hours
A study of world missions from apostolic times to the present. The lives, contributions, strengths and weaknesses of individuals God has used will be considered, with special attention to Baptist mission agencies and the role of African Americans in missions. Analyzes mission trends/strategies so as to build a sound philosophy of missions and an overall confidence in God's ongoing program.
 
CM 306 Cross-Cultural Communications 3 hours
Examines the theory and application of communication across cultural barriers for evangelistic purposes. Covers audience analysis and adaptation; the structure/functions of culture, worldview, and religion; social, psychological, and spiritual aspects of decision making; communication media; strategy development for evangelizing a given people.
 
CM 309 Living World Religions 3 hours
Studies the beliefs and practices of major non-Christian religions, including Judaism, Islam, Zoroastrianism, Bahai, Hinduism, Buddhism, Janism, Sikhism, African and Native American traditional religions, Chinese popular religion, Shinto, and the Japanese synthesis. The growth of these in North America is considered with attention to evangelization without offense.
 
CM 412 Contemporary Issues in Missions 3 hours
Examines the population explosion, urbanization, indigenous Third World Missions, militant Islam, the resurgence of non-Christian religions, contextualization, world hunger, Christian relief/development efforts, ecumenism, non-professional missionaries ("tentmakers"), terrorism, unreached people groups, the retirement bulge, and the United States as a mission field. Prerequisites: CM 201, 302, 306, GS 210
 
CM 413 Area Studies 3 hours
A self-directed research course in which the student focuses in-depth on the historical, cultural, political, economic, and religious elements of a selected country or people group. Prerequisites: CM 201, 302, 306, GS 210
 
CM 490 Specialized Topics in Missions 1-3 hours
An independent study in some topic in the field of international missions, evangelism, urban or cross-cultural ministry, designed to give the student experience in missiological research and/or the doing of a practical research project. Research paper required. Offered on demand. Prerequisite: CM 201.
 
CM 499 International Missions Internship 3 hours
Provides opportunity to observe missions in operation and to minister on a selected field, home or foreign, during a period of not less than six weeks. Student serves under the supervision of an experienced cross-cultural or inter-cultural worker and/or an approved agency. Field evaluation and career guidance are offered. Prerequisite: CM 201.
 

Church Education
 

CE 201 Introduction to Christian Education 3 hours
A survey of the total educational and discipleship program of the local church emphasizing the biblical mandate and foundation. The teaching/learning process and various age groups are studied along with the need for effective organization, administration, and cooperation with the home and school.
 
CE 212 Principles and Methods of Teaching 3 hours
Studies the basics of pedagogy and the individual characteristics of each age level. Students are taught how to study the Bible inductively and from their study prepare, write, and teach Spirit-empowered Bible lessons.
 
CE 303 Christian Education of Children 3 hours
An in-depth study of the nature and needs of children from birth through age eleven with emphasis on how to teach them at each age level. Covers evangelism, worship, music, memorization, creative activities, day care centers, the home and Christian school. Objectives, methods, materials, organization, and evaluation of each church department for children are scrutinized. Prerequisite: CE 201 or 212.
 
CE 305 Christian Education of Adults 3 hours
A study of the methods of reaching and teaching adults through a comprehensive local church program related to the Christian home. Emphasis is given to organization, administration, and selection of curriculum, evaluating available materials, and to leadership development. Prerequisite: CE 201 or 212.
 
CE 312 Women's Ministry 3 hours
Equips women to understand and instruct other women about being godly. Also covers family living, counseling and discipling women, speaking to women's groups, using spiritual gifts in the church, and ministry through the family. Prerequisite: CE 201 or 212.
 
CE 401 Christian Education Practicum 3 hours
Provides Church Education majors with observational and hands-on experience in the various aspects of ministry. Requires diverse activities and evaluations related to teaching and directing of education/discipleship ministries in a local church or other Christian ministry. Prerequisite: CE 201 or 212. Note: Church Education majors should begin work on this course no later than June, two years before graduation, although they will register for the course during the semester in which they anticipate completion.
 
CE 490 Specialized Topics in Church Education 1-3 hours
An independent study in some topic of local church education or ministry designed to give the student experience in researching some topic of interest. Research paper required. Offered on demand. Prerequisite: CE 201 or 212.
 
CE 498 Pre-Seminary Internship 3 hours
Student will be placed under the direction of a pastor, Christian Education Director, Christian School Principal or other professional leader for instruction and training in a local church or other related ministry context. Open to students in the Pre-seminary program who have completed 96 credit hours. Consult with the Pre-seminary advisor to plan and set up the coursework prior to beginning the internship.
 
CE 499 Christian Education Internship 3 hours
Student is placed under a Christian education director, youth director, or a Pastor for instruction and training in a local church context. Apprenticeship in special kinds of work may be arranged in some cases. Open to those who have completed 96 credit hours. Consult with Church education major coordinator early to set up. Prerequisites: CE 201, 212, 401.
 
Biblical Counseling and Discipleship
 
CC 314 Biblical Counseling 3 hours
An introduction to the theological foundations, basic concepts, and distinctive features of biblical counseling. Specific attention is given to preparing pastors and church leaders to solve problems with the Word of God. Covers how to deal with anger, worry, fear, depression, family and sexual problems.
 
CC 315 Dynamics of Change 3 hours
Studies the process of assisting spiritual growth in the areas of renewing the mind, attitudinal change, motivational change, acquiring new behavior, and developing biblical relationships through several biblical methods. As a part of this course, the student will answer the questions for the National Association of Nouthetic Counselor’s Biblical and Theological exam. Prerequisite: CC 314.
 
CC 316 Forming and Leading Small Groups 3 hours
Explores the dynamics, organization, and leadership of the various types of church related small groups. Covers using small groups to evangelize, disciple, provide comfort, provide fellowship, minister within and administer the local church. Prerequisite: CC 314.
 
CC 317 Biblical Counseling Practicum 1 3 hours
During this practicum the student will observe and/or help counsel 60 hours. The student will be able to articulate biblical strategies for addressing several common counseling problems such as anger, worry, fear, depression, family and some sexual problems. Prerequisites: CC 314, 315.
 
CC 401 Family Counseling 3 hours
An in depth study of biblical principles for premarital counseling, marriage counseling (including sexual problems), and family counseling. Principles for counseling children will also be addressed. Prerequisites: CC 314, 315.
 
CC 402 Counseling Urban Problems 3 hours
An in depth study of the counseling problems indigenous to urban areas and biblical strategies for addressing them. Particular attention will be given to counseling addictions, sexual abuse, domestic violence, homelessness, prostitution, and adolescent rebellion. Prerequisites: CC 314, 315.
 
CC 403 Counseling Center Administration 3 hours
A study of the organizational and administration of a biblically based counseling center. Particular attention will be given to promote, staff training, legal issues, records, confidentiality, scheduling, interfacing with leadership, and church discipline. Prerequisites: CC 314, 315.
 
CC 404 Counseling Addictions 3 hours
An in depth study of the nature of addiction and the characteristics of addicted people. Secular treatment strategies will be evaluated from a biblical perspective. Biblical principles and strategies for counseling addicted persons will be considered. Prerequisites: CC 314, 315.
 
CC 406 Biblical Counseling Practicum 2 3 hours
During this practicum the student will counsel for 60 hours. The student will be able to articulate biblical strategies for addressing several challenging counseling problems such as addiction, bizarre behavior, homosexuality, bipolar disorder, ADH and other problems. The student may have 50 of these hours supervised by a NANC fellow thus opening the door for NANC certification. Prerequisite: CC 317.
 
CC 407 Counseling Youth Problems 3 hours
Addresses common problems facing those who counsel adolescents in general and inner-city youth in particular. Biblical strategies for achieving successful outcomes are discussed. Prerequisite: CC 314, 315.
 
CC-410-Counseling Cross Culturally 3 hours
A Study of Biblical principles to Biblically counsel people of a cultural group different than your own. The course covers learning to distinguish between cultural applications of the Word and cultural principles. Learning to understand another culture and accurately applying the Word to that cultural group. Prerequisite: CM 306
 
CC 490 Specialized Topics in Biblical Counseling 1-3 hours
An independent study in some topic of biblical counseling designed to give the student experience in researching some topic of interest. Research paper required. Offered on demand. The student may incorporate the Faith Baptist Counseling Ministries courses Track II, Track III and Track IV into their specialized topics class. Prerequisites: CC 314, 315, 316.
 
CC 499 Biblical Counseling Internship 3 hours
Student will spend 40 hours in some capacity in the administration of a counseling ministry, 40 hours in some capacity in the training of Christians to counsel biblically, 40 hours researching counseling problems and 40 hours networking with other agencies to help clients. Take one of the four courses offered at the Faith Baptist Church Counseling Ministries or other NANC Certified Training Centers. Prerequisites: CC 314, 315, 317, 406.
 

Youth Ministry
 

CY 204 Christian Education of Youth 3 hours
Studies the nature and needs of early, middle, and later adolescence relative to a biblical, practical education program in the Christian home, school and church. Develops a philosophy of youth work and covers objectives, planning, organization, administration and supervision of the youth program. Considers responsibilities of workers and reducing attrition of teens from the church.
 
CY 305 Youth Ministry in Action 3 hours
Exposes the student to various models and strategies of ministering to youth through 120 hours of observation and participation in five different youth ministries selected in consultation with the professor. Prerequisites: CY 204.
 
CY 406 Youth Ministry Practicum 3 hours
Provides hands-on experience to the student in various models and strategies of ministering to youth. 120 hours of participation and leadership in five different youth ministries selected in consultation with the professor. Prerequisites: CY 204, 305.
 
CY 490 Specialized Topics in Youth Ministry 1-3 hours
An independent study in some topic of youth ministry designed to give the student experience in researching some topic of interest. Research paper required. Offered on demand. Prerequisites: CY 204, 305.
 
CY 499 Youth Ministry Internship 3 hours
180 hours of supervised ministry under the direction of an experienced leader in some form of youth ministry. Prerequisites: CY 204, 305.
 

Elementary Education
 

CS 211 The Christian Elementary School 3 hours
An orientation to the Christian school including its philosophy, organization, administration, support, curriculum, and current status. Students will examine several types of schools and resources. History of the American Christian school movement will be considered in contrast to the public school system. Stress is placed upon the need for and qualifications of Christian teachers.
 
CS 301 Christian Philosophy of Education 3 hours
A study of the basic questions in education and how they have been answered historically. Potential teachers are aided in developing a biblically-based philosophy and integrating it into the total program of the school, church and home. The philosophy affects curriculum planning, policies, classroom discipline, and academic standards in the Christian school.
 
CS 306 Teaching Bible to Children 3 hours
A consideration of the various viewpoints in teaching Bible in a Christian elementary school, suitable objectives for specific grade levels, useful methods and available curriculum materials. Prospective teachers will prepare lesson plans and study units based on published materials and directly from the Bible itself. Prerequisites: CS 211, 301.
 
CS 307 Elementary School Curriculum and Methods 3 hours
An overview of the total curriculum and the development of an understanding of the place of each subject; practical suggestions for classroom management; methods, materials and evaluation techniques suitable for use in physical education, health, music, geography, government, and history. Prerequisites: CS 211, 301
 
CS 308 Educational Psychology 3 hours
A course specializing in the field of present day education. Scientific psychological principles are applied to the classroom student/teacher and learning process. Topics considered: learning theories and their applications, characteristics of students, teaching styles, exceptional children. A biblical perspective toward each of these areas is discussed. Prerequisite: CS 211.
 
CS 310 Multicultural Implications for the Christian Elementary School 3 hours
Studies problems, blessings, and methodologies to educate people of mixed races and cultures in Christian elementary schools. Emphasis will be on educating African, Hispanic, and European Americans, but cross-cultural principles valid for every racial or cultural group will be considered. Focuses on education in urban and rapidly changing school environments. Prerequisite: CS 211.
 
CS 312 Teaching Language Arts 3 hours
This course covers methods and materials in the teaching of listening skills, oral communication, written composition, creative writing, English grammar, vocabulary development, spelling, and handwriting. Special emphasis is also given to the principles of reading instruction and materials available in the field, both Christian and secular. The use of phonics is urged. Prerequisites: CS 211, 301.
 
CS 313 Teaching Mathematics 3 hours
A study of the diverse approaches to teaching math on the elementary school level together with their strengths and weaknesses, methods and materials. Resources available, unit planning, testing, and evaluation are also covered. Prerequisites: CS 211, 301.
 
CS 404 Teaching Natural Science 3 hours
A study of the methodology of teaching elementary science, with a broad overview of the various disciplines of general science, including biology, chemistry, physics, astronomy, ecology and the environment. Prerequisites: CS 211, 301.
 
CS 405 Teaching the Social Sciences 3 hours
A study of objectives, organization, and problems in teaching social studies in the Christian elementary school, stressing the materials and methods being successfully used today. Prerequisites: CS 211, 301.

CS 499 Christian School Teaching Internship 3 hours
A culminating experience in the elementary teacher education program including eight to ten weeks of full-time observation, participation, and teaching in a Christian school supervised by a classroom teacher and a College supervisor. Seminar sessions provide for discussion of mutual problems and the sharing of experiences. Prerequisites: Prerequisites: CS 211, 301, 312, 313, 404, 405.
